4. Specific processing of personal information in certain Klarna services
This Section presents the processing of your personal data specific to certain Services. For more information about our Services and their features, please refer to the terms and conditions of the corresponding Service.
4.1 Klarna credit services
The following Services involve the granting of credit: Pay later (invoice), Pay now (direct debit), Financing, in addition to the Klarna Card and the one-time card (both available in the Klarna App). To provide these Services, we conduct a credit assessment. The credit assessment is based on the contact and identification details provided, information about your interaction with Klarna, as well as financial information. Financial information includes information obtained externally through credit rating agencies, such as income and payment observations. You can learn more about our use of credit rating agencies in section 7.4.
Klarna Card and the one-time card
When you apply for the Klarna card and the one-time card (available in the Klarna app), Klarna conducts a credit assessment, just as we do with the rest of our credit services. If you have a Klarna card, Klarna continuously updates the credit score based on your interactions with Klarna.
We share information about you and the purchases you make when using the Klarna card with VISA and participants in the VISA card network to the extent necessary to process card transactions, prevent fraud, and comply with applicable regulations. If you renew your Klarna card or receive a new one, we will pass this information to VISA so that VISA can inform third parties who have stored your card details (for example, for recurring transactions).
If you add your Klarna card to a digital wallet, we may need to share your data with the digital wallet provider if indicated in that provider's privacy notice.
4.2 Promotions and event invitations posted on social media
If you have selected any of our promotions or event invitations posted on social media, we may receive the contact information provided in your profile (such as your name, email address, and phone number, as well as other professional information such as your employer's name, address, and industry). We use this information to provide you with the requested Service, as well as promotions and offers on our Services. You can always unsubscribe by contacting us, see section 13.
4.3 Klarna accounts (savings and payment accounts)
If you have a Klarna account, Klarna will also process information about your transactions and funds. If you make transactions or payments on other accounts, Klarna will pass your name and account number to the recipient and their financial institution.
Additionally, if you have made payments on a Klarna account, Klarna will process the information received from the bank you used for the transaction, such as your name and account number.
4.4 User experience provided under Klarna's terms of use
In order to provide a tailored user experience, before and after a purchase, Klarna offers the services described below, which are also explained in more detail in Klarna's service terms. The use of these Services involves the following processing of your personal data:
Transaction history
We store information about the products/services purchased using our Services, or we choose to provide access so that you can view this information.
Completion of information.
Information may be completed in two ways: manually by the user and/or via "cookies".
Manual completion of information
When you use our Services, we may ask for your contact and identification information, such as your name, address, phone number, email address, date of birth, and/or national identification number, as well as other information, if applicable. We store this information in our systems so that when you return or use our Services again, you only need to provide certain information, such as your phone number, email address, postal code, or identification number (depending on the country), so that we can complete the remaining fields with the information previously provided.
Implementation via "cookies"
Another method that could be used to complete your information is to use "cookies" on your device (computer, tablet, mobile phone, etc.), which allow you to choose whether or not to store information such as your name, address, phone number, email address, date of birth, national identification number, and card details. If you do, we will use the "cookie" to obtain the remaining information incorporated into Klarna when you use our services on the same device. We will automatically fill in this information in your interactions with Klarna.
Disabling automatic information filling
If you do not wish to use the automatic information filling features, you can contact us to adjust your settings. You can also adjust your settings directly from the Klarna app or when making a purchase at a merchant. You can delete cookies from your device at any time, which will consequently remove our cookies.
Pre-selected preferred payment methods
Klarna may assess which payment method is your preferred means of payment when you shop and pre-select this payment method for you. However, this process and intervention do not determine which payment methods will be available. For this, both the information available on previous interactions with Klarna and the information on previously selected payment methods, the prices of purchases, as well as the establishments are processed. This assessment results in "profiling." See section 6 for more information on profile creation.
Offers and benefits
In order to offer you deals and benefits such as discounts, special events, early access to products, sales promotions, merchant offers, samples, gifts, etc., information about your previous interactions with Klarna (such as the number of purchases made over a certain period of time), identification and contact data, information about goods/services, and information about your interaction with businesses may be used. This may involve profiling. See section 6 for more information on profile creation.
This information is used as a basis for Klarna's marketing and customer analysis, business development, and methods, as well as for statistical purposes.
As part of the offers and benefits program, this information may be used to communicate with you and send you offers and benefits, by Klarna, its suppliers, and its subcontractors (acting on behalf of Klarna), via physical mail, text messages, emails, social media, and other digital communication channels. Klarna and its suppliers and subcontractors will not use any direct marketing channel for this purpose (e.g., emails or SMS) if you have chosen not to participate in direct marketing campaigns (or, respectively, if you have not expressly indicated your willingness to participate in direct marketing campaigns, but this is a legal obligation in your country of residence).
You can opt out of receiving offers or benefits either by unsubscribing via the link provided in each of our emails or by contacting us, see Section 13.
Klarna App
If you use the Klarna app, we will process additional personal information (e.g., information uploaded by you with your consent) in order to provide you with the services you choose in the app, as described below. Additionally, when you choose to use benefits or participate in specific offers, the provider of these offers may infer that you are using Klarna services. The personalization of the content of the Klarna app involves the creation of a customer profile, which is an integral part of the Klarna app as an online shopping assistant. You can find more information about profile creation in section 6 below.
- Personalized items and advertisements: you may see personalized items and advertisements based on your previous purchases, contact details, and identification information, information about goods or services, information about the interaction between you and Klarna, and information about the interaction between you and merchants, on devices and service-specific information.
- Sponsored links: if you select a sponsored link promoting a store, product, or service, you will be redirected to the store's website via a third party, a so-called "affiliate network" (as explained in section 7.14). The affiliate network may use tracking technology on your device that contains information indicating that you selected such a link on the Klarna app, which could then be used to track your visit to the store and thus calculate a potential commission for Klarna.
- Personalized Klarna overview: an overview is presented, showing the status of your Klarna purchases and your purchase history, you can access potential refunds, settle payments, and extend your payment terms.
- Personalized shopping collections: if you have shared information with us regarding the topics, products, and services that generally interest you, we will use this information to offer you personalized shopping options, where you can find products and services suited to your interests.
- Delivery and package tracking: In some cases, you will be able to track the route of your package.
Ability to "follow" stores – If you choose to "follow" a store, you will receive information about campaigns related to that store. Klarna will automatically assess whether your purchases entitle you to discounts and other offers as part of that store's campaign. - Credit services: We may offer you credit based on your previous purchases.
- One-time use card purchases: making purchases through the Klarna app is a way to use Klarna payment methods in virtually any store, via the one-time use card. When you use the one-time use card, Klarna collects information about your purchases and displays it in the app.
- Customer service: when you contact our customer service via or in relation to the Klarna app, we will have access to the information you provide.
- Email login – If you have connected your email account to Klarna's email login service, Klarna will regularly access your email account and extract information related to purchases, as well as tracking IDs and other information about products and services and your interaction with stores to fill in this information in the Klarna app. You can disable this service at any time, thereby removing Klarna's access.
Store locator – You have the option to choose to share your location. If you consent to use this information, Klarna will show you the nearest stores. At any time, you can revoke your consent by disabling sharing on your device. Klarna will not record your location once we have shown you the stores. - The web browser within the application: the Klarna Application contains a web browser in which you can access the websites of stores and online shops to make purchases using Klarna payment methods, as well as stores that do not yet use our payment methods. Klarna collects information on how you use the search engine to offer you deals and promotions that may be relevant. Additionally, the websites you visit may install their own "cookies" and other tracking technologies on your device.
- Visual search: you can choose to upload photos of products, either by taking a photo of the product or by selecting a photo from your mobile phone's gallery, and we will try to find similar products to show you.
- Favorites (wish list): you can choose to add products and services from the Klarna application to your favorites for later viewing or to track their prices. You can also share your favorites list with others like your friends and family, so they can see your profile picture and name. In some cases, if you are registered on a store's website, the link to a product or service you choose to add to your Favorites may include personal information about you from that website, such as your email address.
- Your linked bank accounts (Personal Financial Service): using this Service will allow you to get an overview of your financial situation, including not only your transactions with Klarna but also in relation to your linked bank accounts. When you choose to use this Service, Klarna will process information about external bank accounts and other accounts (such as card accounts) that you choose to link, as well as collect personal information such as account number, bank, account transaction history, or available funds and assets. Based on this information, Klarna will be able to visualize and provide you with the necessary tools to control your finances through offers tailored to your specific situation (and using profiling, as detailed in section 6). This is done by comparing your spending with that of other users of the Service. Based on this comparison, we can, in collaboration with our business partners, offer you ways to minimize your fixed and non-fixed costs.
- Profile picture – You can choose to publish a profile picture in the Klarna application, in which case such an image may be displayed in various Klarna interfaces (for example, when checking out at a store using Klarna, or in the Klarna application). Klarna interfaces may also be found integrated into store applications. This image may also be shown to others if you share your device (while using autofill features via "cookies") or if you choose to share the content of your Klarna application with others. You can, at any time, remove your image in the Klarna application or by contacting us.
5. Withdraw consent
In cases where Klarna processes your personal data based on your consent or explicit consent (for example, if you provide a power of attorney allowing another party to access your information, in cases where information is provided indicating that you are a vulnerable customer, or if you have uploaded special category personal data to our services), you can, at any time, withdraw this consent, either by contacting us or by deleting your data from the Klarna application. Withdrawing consent will not cause you any harm, as we do not need this type of information to provide our Services.
6. Profiling and automated decision-making
Profiling involves the automated processing of your personal data to evaluate certain personal aspects of you, such as the ability to analyze or predict aspects of your financial situation or preferences, such as your purchasing interests. We use profiling based on the personal data we hold about you in order to make individual or automated decisions for the following purposes:
Decisions with no legal effect or similar significant effect
Klarna makes the following decisions with no legal effect or similar significant effect for you:
- Predict which marketing content may interest you. You can always object and unsubscribe from this advertising and profiling by contacting us (for more information on the processing of personal information for marketing purposes, see section 3);
- Decide which loyalty rewards would suit you (see section 4.4 Offers and Benefits for more information);
- Decide the most appropriate way to contact you regarding an unpaid debt (see section 3 for more information);
- Decide what content you want to display in the Klarna application. See section 4.4 Klarna Application for more information.
- Decide in what order different payment methods should be displayed at checkout in a store using Klarna.
Additionally, some of our Services (such as when you connect your bank and similar accounts in the Klarna application) use profiling to provide you with the relevant Service, for example by providing relevant financial information or selecting the offers to present to you, according to the terms of the corresponding Service.
Decisions with legal effect or similar significant effect
Automated decision-making with legal effects, or automated decisions with a similar significant effect, means that some decisions related to our Services are based solely on automated means, without the interaction of any of our employees, and have a significant impact on you as a consumer. Through such automated decision-making, Klarna increases the objectivity and transparency of decisions when offering Services.
We use this type of automated decision-making when:
- We have decided to approve your request to use our credit services;
- We have decided not to approve your request to use our credit services;
- We determine that you represent a risk of fraud or money laundering, if our process reveals that you exhibit behavior consistent with money laundering, fraudulent conduct, behavior inconsistent with your previous use of our Services, or seem to have deliberately concealed your true identity. In some cases, Klarna also checks whether a specific customer is included in the so-called sanctions list.
See section 3 for more information on the types of personal data processed for these purposes.
You always have the right to contest an automated decision with legal effect or similar significant effect (with the profile connected to it), by contacting us at the email address mentioned in section 13. A Klarna employee will evaluate your case.
7. Who do we share your personal data with?
We may share your personal data with the categories of recipients listed below for the purposes detailed below. The specific choice of recipients with whom personal data is shared depends on the Service used and the purposes for which it is intended. When we share your personal data, we take all reasonable contractual, legal, technical, and organizational measures to ensure that your data is processed securely and with an adequate level of protection, and in accordance with applicable law.
7.1 Suppliers and subcontractors
Klarna shares personal data with the suppliers and subcontractors we use to provide our services. Suppliers and subcontractors are companies that are only allowed to process the personal data they receive from Klarna, on behalf of Klarna. Examples of these suppliers and subcontractors include software and data storage providers, payment processing services, or business consultants.
7.2 Stores
Klarna shares personal data with the stores you visit or shop at (which may include the store group companies, if you have been informed by the store). This allows the establishment to execute and manage your purchase and to manage your relationship with the store or group companies, for example, to verify your identity, send you products, manage any issues or disputes, send you interest-based marketing, and prevent fraud. The personal data shared with a merchant is subject to that merchant's privacy statements and practices.
7.3 Payment service providers ("PSP") and financial institutions
PSPs provide stores and Klarna with services to accept and manage electronic payment methods, through a variety of payment methods, including credit and bank card payments such as direct debit, bank transfers, etc. Some companies use PSPs with whom they also share their information for payment processing. They share information in accordance with the provisions of their privacy notices. Stores may also, for the purposes of processing and administering payments, ask us to share your information with the PSPs. Additionally, some PSPs also collect and use your information independently in accordance with their own privacy notices. This is the case, for example, if you use a digital wallet.
Furthermore, Klarna may share information with other financial institutions when you make transactions with your Klarna account, in order to carry them out.
7.4 Credit rating agencies
If you request to use a credit service (see section 4.1 for more details on our credit services), your personal data may be shared with credit rating agencies ("CRA") to assess your credit score in relation to your application, to confirm your identity and contact details, and to protect you, as well as other customers, against fraud. This exchange constitutes a credit inquiry.
In Spain, Klarna sends the CRA your address, date of birth, as well as the tax identification number (NIF), foreign identity number (NIE), and/or national identity document (DNI) for the purpose of conducting the "credit inquiry" about you. This inquiry or "credit search" will affect your credit score with the CRA.
Klarna will also share information about your payments (including late payments and undisputed non-payments) with the CRA, and this information may be included in credit default records, which could affect your credit score with the CRA, and be accessed by third parties.
The CRAs will process your information in accordance with their own privacy policies, and you can find the agencies we work with here.
Please note that Klarna only retains the credit assessment received from a CRA in script data format. This means that you are advised to request a copy of the assessment directly from the CRA if you wish to see a readable version.
7.5 Fraud prevention agencies and companies providing identity verification services
Your personal data may be shared with fraud prevention agencies and companies that provide identity verification services to verify your identity, the accuracy of the information provided, and to prevent criminal activities. The companies we cooperate with in Spain are detailed here. Please note that these companies process your data in accordance with their own privacy statements.
7.6 Klarna Group
Your information may be shared with Klarna group companies, based on Klarna's legitimate interest in conducting its business.
7.7 Social media companies
If you contact us via social media such as Facebook or Twitter, your data will be recorded and processed by these companies, in accordance with their privacy statements.
7.8 A person with a power of attorney
Klarna will share your data with a person who provides us with a power of attorney granted by you in favor of that person to receive your data. The data will be shared based on your consent.
7.9 Google
When you use Google Maps during the checkout process (for example, when searching for your address in the address field) or in the Klarna app, Google will process your information in accordance with the terms of service and privacy policy of Google Maps/Google Earth. Additionally, when you use the Klarna app via a web browser, Google collects information about your device through its reCAPTCHA service, sometimes in combination with any information you enter into the reCAPTCHA service. Google processes this information in accordance with its own privacy policy. Klarna processes this data based on its legitimate interest in conducting its business, as the reCAPTCHA service prevents any misuse of our services.
7.10 Authorities
Klarna may disclose the necessary information to authorities such as the police, tax agencies, or other authorities if required by law or, in certain circumstances, if you request it from us, or if necessary, to arrange tax deductions. An example of such legally required disclosure concerns money laundering or the fight against terrorism financing.
7.11 Logistics and transport companies
Klarna may share your information with logistics and transport companies that deliver the ordered products to you, if you have opted for package tracking. Examples of data we share include contact and identification information, as well as the tracking number. Please note that logistics and transport companies process your data in accordance with their own privacy statements.
7.12 Partners in personal financial services and offers and benefits programs
If you decide to take advantage of the offers and benefits provided by Klarna through the personal financial service or through the offers and benefits program, Klarna may share necessary personal information in order to allow you to access the offers made in cooperation with our partners (this includes whether you are a Klarna customer). The personal information shared is displayed in each of the offers.
7.13 Debt collection agencies and other entities acquiring outstanding credits
Klarna may share information about you when it sells or collects unpaid debts to third parties, for example, to debt collection agencies. The personal information shared is based on a legitimate interest in collecting and selling debts. Debt collection agencies, or any other type of purchaser of outstanding credit, may process your personal data in accordance with their own privacy notices, or on behalf of Klarna. Debt collection agencies, or any other type of purchaser of outstanding credit, may also report your unpaid debt to credit rating agencies, which may affect your credit score and your ability to obtain credit in the future.
7.14 Affiliate networks
Klarna may share information indicating that you have selected a sponsored link (i.e., links that promote stores, products, or services) with what are called "affiliate networks." This exchange occurs when you select a sponsored link as you will be redirected to the store's website via an "affiliate network." The affiliate network may use tracking technologies on your device that contain information indicating that you selected a sponsored link on one of Klarna's interfaces, in order to track your visit to the store and thus calculate any commission for Klarna. Affiliate networks may process your personal data in accordance with their own privacy statements.
7.15 Divestment
- In the event that Klarna sells or purchases the credit position in a credit subject to a claim procedure, a business, or an asset, Klarna may disclose your personal data to the seller or potential buyer of that credit position, business, or asset.
If Klarna or all its assets are acquired by a third party, the personal data of Klarna customers may be disclosed and shared.
8. Where does Klarna process your personal data?
We strive to ensure that the processing of your personal data always takes place within the EU/EEA. However, in certain circumstances, for example when we share your personal data with a company in the Klarna group, or with a supplier or subcontractor located outside the EU/EEA, your personal data may nevertheless be transferred and processed to a destination outside the EU/EEA. If the store where you are purchasing is located outside the EU/EEA, sharing your personal data with the store will mean that your data will be transferred outside the EU/EEA.
We ensure that an adequate level of protection is guaranteed and that appropriate safeguards are in place in accordance with the requirements of data protection regulations, such as the GDPR, whenever transfers of your data occur outside the EU/EEA. These safeguards consist of ensuring that the country or third state concerned is subject to an adequacy decision by the European Commission or that the European Commission's standard contractual clauses apply.
9. Retention of personal data
We will process your personal data for the period necessary to achieve the respective purpose of our processing. These purposes are described in this privacy statement. This means that even if we stop processing your personal data for a specific purpose, we may still need to retain your personal data for another purpose, using it only for that other purpose. In particular:
- As long as you have accepted our Klarna Service Terms, and until you terminate these terms (by contacting us or requesting that we delete the data, for example by making a request for erasure), we will process the personal data we need in order to provide you with the Services, including, but not limited to, data related to previous purchases.
- We process personal data included in credit checks for the purpose of conducting new credit assessments for a period of 90 days from the date the check was performed.
- We process personal data related to debt for the purpose of conducting new credit assessments for a period of three (3) years after the cessation of the debt – through payment of the debt, cancellation of the debt by Klarna, or sale of the debt by Klarna.
- We process recordings of telephone conversations for a period of 90 days from the date of recording, for quality assurance purposes.
- We process personal data in order to comply with applicable laws, such as consumer rights regulations, banking regulations, anti-money laundering regulations, as well as accounting regulations. Depending on applicable legislation, your personal data may be processed for up to ten years after the end of the customer relationship.
10. Your rights regarding personal data
- Right to be informed. You have the right to be informed about how we process your information. This is done through this privacy statement, other information available on our website, and by answering questions submitted to us.
- Right of access to your data. You can request a copy of your data if you want to know what personal data we process about you. This copy of your personal data can also be provided in a machine-readable format (i.e., "data portability").
- Right to rectify your data. You have the right to correct inaccurate or incomplete information about you.
- Right to delete your data. You have the right to request the deletion or erasure of your personal data, for example when we no longer need to process the information for the purposes for which it was collected or when you have withdrawn your consent. As described in more detail in sections 3 and 9, Klarna is still required to comply with certain legal obligations that prevent us from immediately deleting some of your data.
- Right to restrict the processing of your data or to object to our processing. If you believe that your information is incorrect or that we are using your data unlawfully, you have the right to request the cessation of this processing. You may also object to our processing if you believe there are circumstances that would make this processing unlawful. Additionally, you can always object to the use of your data for direct marketing purposes.
- Right to contest an automated decision. You have the right to contest an automated decision made by Klarna. Please refer to section 6 for more information on how Klarna uses automated decisions.
- Right to withdraw consent. As stated in section 5, we process your data based on your consent or explicit consent, and in this regard, you can withdraw this consent at any time.
- Right to file complaints. You have the right to file a complaint with your national data protection authority or the Swedish Data Protection Authority (DPA). Complaints to the Swedish DPA can be made via this link: https://www.datainspektionen.se/other-lang/in-english/
- Control service settings in the Klarna app. In the app, Klarna offers the option to customize your preferences for certain services, for example, if you wish to receive personalized communications or notifications. We will always respect your decisions.
11. Cookies and other tracking technologies
To provide a personalized and hassle-free experience, we use cookies and other tracking technologies on our online interfaces, such as our website, the Klarna app, and the checkouts of stores that cooperate with Klarna. You can find information about the tracking technologies we use and respectively accept or decline the corresponding tracking technologies in their respective interfaces.
12. Update of the privacy statement
We are constantly working to improve our Service offerings and ensure that you have an even more enjoyable user experience. This includes both changes to existing services and new services over time. Therefore, it is important that you read this privacy statement each time you use a Klarna service, as the processing of your data may have changed since the last time you used our services.
