What is the AdBlue tank and what does it do?

The AdBlue tank stores the urea liquid (AdBlue) that is injected into the SCR system of diesel vehicles to reduce NOx emissions. It is mandatory in Euro 6 diesel vehicles. It includes level and quality sensors, pump and filler cap.

How do I know if my AdBlue tank is faulty?

Failure signs: AdBlue warning light on, SCR system fault message, bluish liquid leaks under the vehicle, "will not start in X km" warning, incorrect AdBlue level reading and urea crystallisation in the tank. Faulty level sensor is the most common cause.

Can an AdBlue tank be repaired or must it be replaced?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the failure. Sensors and pump can be changed separately on some models. However, if the tank is cracked, internally crystallised or the sensor is integrated, the complete assembly must be changed. Our tanks include all sensors and accessories.

What causes AdBlue to crystallise in the tank?

Accepted Answer

Crystallisation occurs when AdBlue is contaminated with dirt, water or fuel, or when the vehicle remains unused for a long time. AdBlue has a shelf life of approximately 1 year in the tank. Using quality certified AdBlue (ISO 22241) prevents crystallisation.

Can I drive without AdBlue in the tank?

Accepted Answer

No. Euro 6 vehicles with SCR system have a blocking system that prevents starting the engine when AdBlue is completely depleted (0%). The system warns in advance (2,400 km, 1,600 km, 800 km) before blocking. Refilling AdBlue on time avoids being immobilised.
