Start/Stop System: Efficiency and Fuel Savings

All manufacturers are committed to the goal of reducing CO2 emissions to meet increasingly strict regulatory parameters. While on one hand, efforts are made to achieve this result by designing increasingly efficient engines, on the other hand, various devices have been adopted, such as the start and stop system, dedicated to this specific purpose.

How does it work?

The Start and Stop is a system that automatically turns off the car's engine when it stops to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. At the moment the driver stops the vehicle and puts it in neutral, the system comes into action, turning off the car's engine.

To reactivate the engine, simply press the clutch again and put it in first gear. The start&stop will automatically recognize the restart situation and start the engine.

The start&stop system automatically disconnects when:

the vehicle's battery charge is insufficient to ensure its operation;

the engine's operating temperature is not optimal;

there is a significant climate difference between the inside of the vehicle and the outside due to the action of the air conditioning system.

Start and Stop Battery

For the start&stop system to function correctly, it is not possible to use a standard battery; instead, it is necessary to equip the vehicle with one that has more powerful accumulators, capable of withstanding the numerous starts required by the start and stop.

In fact, while for cars without this system it is sufficient to use a battery designed for an average cycle of 30,000 starts, for those equipped with start and stop this figure multiplies to 300,000 starts.

The start and stop battery, therefore, is specifically manufactured to withstand greater wear and tear and consequently has higher acquisition costs than a standard one.

The start and stop does not work

The start&stop system can reduce fuel consumption by around 8%, especially in cars that circulate in the chaos of urban traffic and often have to wait a long time at traffic lights. However, this device can cause some problems in certain cases.
